YIG FILTER A tunable bandpass filter constructed using yttrium iron garnet (YIG) resonators and often used as preselector. Coils placed at right angles to each other around a YIG crystal in a magnetic field are cross-coupled when energized by the electron spin precession frequency. Altering the magnetic field by means of a control current tunes the filter to a particular frequency.
YIG OSCILLATOR A broadband tunable oscillator based around a YIG resonator used as a local oscillator.
YTTRIUM IRON GARNET (YIG) A chemical compound, formula Y Fe O, having ferromagnetic properties and used for producing reciprocal and nonreciprocal electronic components. Its uses are based on the precession of the electron spin when placed in a magnetic field (YIG filter).
