Willtek Communications extends testing capabilities for the repair of mobile and base stations, cable TV and Wireless local area networks

New software for Willtek 9101 Handheld Spectrum Analyzer raises productivity in service with new spectrum analyzer functions

Ismaning/Chessington/Indianapolis, 24 March, 2004 – Willtek Communications today announced the launch of a new software version for the Willtek 9101 Handheld Spectrum Analyzer.  Increasing its measurement capabilities the tester will help technicians to find faults and to repair and align RF devices for cable TV, Wireless LAN and mobile communication applications. Willtek designs its testers to enable increased efficiency and productivity for operators and handset manufacturers.  The improvements in the 9101 tester announced today bolster the advanced functions it already provides by adding pre-defined, application oriented capabilities allowing technicians to focus on measurement and alignment.  This will ease their job and help them become more effective in their work. These new functions are possible in a spectrum analyzer only because the 9101 has a power measurement accuracy that is unmatched in this price range.

In addition to the channel power measurement capability that is already available on the instrument, the new application includes adjacent channel power ratio and occupied bandwidth. Both functions allow a selective measurement in modulated broadcast and carrier systems e.g.  GSM, UMTS, WLAN and cable TV.

Two new functions help to achieve proper absolute power measurement results when the external RF connection differs from a standard setup.

Attenuation or gain introduced by external cabling and devices can now be compensated by the software. In addition, cables and transmitters with an impedance of 75 ohms can be connected through an adaptor in combination with the new software to compensate frequency-dependent losses; this is important because TV equipment uses 75 ohms while most other RF equipment applies 50 ohms impedance.

The 9101 is a low-cost, full-featured spectrum analyzer applied in many fields, such as mobile phone service, Wireless Local Loop and for new 2.4 GHz WiFi systems. Typical measurements look at transmitter characteristics, alignment of modulators and measure amplifier gain. With a frequency range of 100 kHz to 4 GHz, the 9101 can test all modern wireless local oscillators, plus the harmonics and spurs that sneak into the pass-band. The 140 degree viewing angle and a colour display with enhanced graphics provide a perfect view of all details. Manual operation is easy with many marker functions, storage of setups and user-defined limit templates. With the built-in remote control capability via RS?232 or LAN, the 9101 is also used in monitoring and automated test environments.
