Datang Mobile and Willtek Communications announce strategic partnership for the development of TD-SCDMA tester for mobile phone mass production

TD-SCDMA inventor Datang acknowledges Willtek’s experience in fast and precise mobile phone testing

Shanghai and Ismaning, 2 November, 2004 – Willtek Communications (China) Ltd and Datang Mobile Communications Equipment Co. Ltd today announced a cooperation for the development of a tester specifically designed to support mass production of TD-SCDMA mobile phones. The product is expected to become available in mid-2005, in time for the commercial availability of handsets and services in the same year.

Mr Steven Chu, Vice General Manager of Datang Mobile Communications Equipment Co. Ltd (Shanghai subsidiary) explained: “Datang Mobile has selected Willtek for the development of a mobile phone tester that will enable rapid ramp-up in mass production of TD-SCDMA phones and wireless devices. Willtek was chosen for its experience in manufacturing equipment for mobile phones, and the flexibility of the 4400 test platform which enables rapid test program development and customisation.”

“In line with the Ministry of Information Industry (MII) requirements, Datang considers the availability of high-quality test equipment as a key enabler for the commercialisation of TD-SCDMA technology in the near future”, said Mr Tang Ru’an, President of Datang Mobile, and continued, “Our partnership with Willtek is a direct response to this need. We are glad that with Willtek we have found a reliable expert in the field of high-volume production of wireless devices.”

Cyrille Damany, President and CEO of Willtek Communications, added: “We are proud to cooperate with the driving force behind TD-SCDMA, and looking forward to support this Chinese technology become a prosperous 3G standard. We build upon the experience with successful mobile phone vendors already using the Willtek 4400 Mobile Phone Tester Series for the production of GSM, GPRS, CDMA2000 and WCDMA phones; the 4400 hardware platform is ready for TD-SCDMA.”

The two companies will cooperate to enhance the 4400 TD-SCDMA version introduced at PT/Expo to add features which will allow a complete functional test of a TD-SCDMA phone. Already today, the 4400 performs all tests required to calibrate a TD-SCDMA phone. This capability allows design engineers to verify the quality of the RF design, and mobile handset manufacturers to immediately start integration of 4400 based test systems in production lines. The unique flexibility of the 4400 platform enables Willtek to integrate Datang technology and provide the additional functional testing capability in time for mass production of TD-SCDMA handsets.

About the 4400 Mobile Phone Tester

Willtek’s 4400 Mobile Phone Testers are the most cost-effective test solution for those in the manufacturing and service/repair markets requiring a multi-technology platform.  By quickly testing GSM, GPRS, EGPRS (EDGE), CDMA and Wideband CDMA terminals, the Willtek 4400 provides the lowest total test cost per device and drastically reduces production downtime because one system can easily switch from one technology to another.

About TD-SCDMA

TD-SCDMA is a third generation (3G) wireless technology developed by China. In 2002, the China Ministry of Information Industries allocated 155 MHz of bandwidth to TD-SCDMA. Datang has been the co-inventor and principal driver of TD-SCDMA, owning the core technologies as well as developing the access network. The TD-SCDMA technology proposed by Datang on behalf of China was adopted by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and by the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP).

TD-SCDMA uses the Time Division Duplex (TDD) mode, which transmits uplink traffic and downlink traffic in the same frame in different time slots. That means that the uplink and downlink spectrum is assigned flexibly, dependent on the type of information being transmitted. When asymmetrical data like email and internet are transmitted from the base station, more time slots are used for downlink than for uplink. A symmetrical split in the uplink and downlink takes place with symmetrical services like telephony.
