Ismaning, 9 February, 2005 – Willtek Communications today announced the new 4921 RF Shield, a new radio frequency (RF) shielding solution to be used in the testing of wireless devices such as 3G cellular phones, as well as data cards and WLAN equipment in large service centres and manufacturing lines. The shielding box is designed to hold the mobile phone under test and potentially an antenna coupler, and provides connectors for external test equipment. The new box is the first of its kind to fulfil all the requirements of repair factories and production centres in terms of attenuation, longevity, price and dimensions.
“With the 4921 RF Shield and the 4916 Antenna Coupler, Willtek supports service centres and manufacturers in the reliable testing of 3G wireless devices like no one before”, explained Cyrille Damany, CEO of Willtek Communications.
He continued, “In our continued effort to help increase our customers’ efficiency, we at Willtek find that it is the small things which have the highest potential for improvement because they are often the weakest elements in the chain. That’s why we don’t stop at instruments but pay similar attention to accessories and options.”
The new shielding box easily fulfils the 80 dB attenuation requirement for testing mobile phones for UMTS and other third-generation wireless networks. The new demand stems from the high dynamic range of power level output in CDMA phones, as well as from the relatively low bandwidth available for WCDMA, making it virtually impossible to apply testing on an unused channel.
A military standard, VG95373 part 15, defines the requirements for testing the shielding, and the 4921 RF Shield is probably the first product of its kind that has undergone comprehensive tests traceable to an international standard. Until now, each manufacturer applied its own method of measurements.
The mechanical stability of the 4921 RF Shield also has been tested thoroughly. So far, Willtek can warrant the same high radio frequency isolation after at least 30,000 open-close cycles of the box without significant wear and tear of the gaskets. Even when gaskets or gas spring struts have reached the end of their life time, customers can easily replace them with a service kit rather than having to buy a complete new box.
The 4921 RF Shield is designed for high-volume phone testing in service factories and production sites and, considering its high quality, comes at an excellent price-performance ratio. The 4920 RF Shield Box, of which Willtek has sold several thousand already, remains on the market as a lower-priced box for those in the mobile phone repair business who count tested phones by dozens, not hundreds per day.
About UMTS (WCDMA)
WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) will bring high-speed data applications such as video telephony to mobile users worldwide. It is a leading 3G mobile telecommunications technology branded as UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) and defined by the 3GPP (3G partnership project), a joint project of the international telecommunication standardisation bodies, ARIB, CCSA, ETSI, T1, TTA, and TTC.
About the Willtek 4916 Antenna Coupler
The Willtek 4916 Antenna Coupler is an essential extension to all mobile phone testers. The coupler supports extended frequency ranges for 3G mobile phone testing in addition to WLAN and Bluetooth. Using RF coupling, the 4916 allows non-wired connection mobile phone testing. The mobile phone antenna is also verified when the 4916 Antenna Coupler is used, resulting in a complete functional check of all mobile phone parts.
