C. Zooming into an RF signal

Q: How can I setup the spectrum analyzer to best view and analyze a signal?

A: Signals can be measured and verified easily when the signal is zoomed to cover the whole screen. Start with Full span or the frequency range for your target signal. Reduce the Ref. Level so that the strongest signal (not necessarily the wanted signal) comes close to the top line without touching or exceeding it. Mark this signal with the marker. Select Marker set Center. Reduce the span to view the target signal in the right shape.

Note: If there are other strong signals apart from the observed one, keep the Attenuator settings for the strongest signal otherwise you will see additional spurious signals which are intermodulation products.
