Characterizing the path loss between CDMA mobiles and the Willtek 4916 Antenna Coupler

The Willtek 4302 and 4303 Mobile Service Testers allow to precisely measure the transmit power level and the receiver sensitivity when testing over an RF cable. But many phones are not equipped with an antenna connector; how do you compensate the coupling loss for over-the-air measurements?

The application note below explains how to obtain the coupling loss with a "golden mobile" before starting tests. These reference measurements can be done in manual mode or can also be automated. For semi-automatic measurements, Willtek provides two scripts that can be executed on the 4300 series instruments for this purpose.
